The 2018 Conference Proceedings can be viewed here: SSO Sixth Annual Conference Proceedings.

HOTEL INFORMATION

The conference will be held at:

Griffin Gate Marriott Resort & Spa
1800 Newtown Pike
Lexington, KY 40511

The Griffin Gate has let us know what the room block is full. You may call Marriott reservations at 1-800-228-9290 for more details,  and to confirm the status of the SSO:USA 2018 Room Block.

Also, please note: The hotel has recently implemented a $15.00 per day Resort Fee. The SSO:USA 2018 Room Block is exempt from the resort fee charges. The online reservation system automatically calculates the resort fee in figuring up the total charges for the booking. Unfortunately, this is not something that can be removed from the online reservation system; therefore, the Resort Fee charge will be removed from your bill onsite prior to payment processing.

OCCUPATIONAL BALANCE

One of the unique features of SSO:USA conferences is the attention devoted to balance and the quality of participants’ experiences.  Researchers should leave an SSO:USA conference refreshed and stimulated.  Shared meals, conference break blocks, and a range of balance activities encourage attendees to rejuvenate, network, and explore local culture.  2018 opportunities include hiking and biking on the Resort’s 200+ acres; spa discounts; exploring the thoroughbred horse industry at the races and horse farms; experiencing Kentucky craft, music, and food traditions; and expeditions to historic homes, The Bourbon Trail, or Shaker Village.  Come see for yourself the fall beauty, history, and friendliness of Kentucky and her people.

Information on occupational balance activities can be found in the following document: SSO-USA Occupational Balance Activities

Pre-register for the "Learn to Make Bourbon Balls" event here.

Pre-register for Sunrise Yoga (on Friday, 10/12/18; $20), by calling the Resort Spa, (859) 288-2020, by 9/25/18.

Come out on Saturday night for a Kentucky-style house party on October 13th, at 7:00pm. The invitation and directions can be found here.

SILENT AUCTION

To appreciate and honor the beauty, art and craftsmanship of occupations as well as our research, SSO:USA holds a silent auction at our annual conference. All proceeds from the auction go to SSO:USA in support of student scholarship.

Please consider donating a high quality, handmade item – made by you or an artist/craftsman you admire. Kindly complete the auction description sheet, with details of the item and donor. Any stories about the item, what it is made of, its meaning and its creator are appreciated. You will receive a tax-deductible receipt for your donation. Please let us know about your donation by September 30, 2018, though we will continue to accept items up to the Silent Auction.  Please plan to bring your auction item(s) with you to Lexington to the conference registration table. Please e-mail your completed auction description sheet (attached) to Silent Auction Coordinator, Linda Buxell, at [email protected].

Definitely plan on attending this special event Friday evening in support of the mission of SSO:USA.

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Conference Theme: Sleep and Restoration

2018 Ruth Zemke Lecture in Occupational Science by Wendy Wood, Ph.D., OTR/LEnvisioning the Environment, Time, and Occupation

Catalyzing Occupation in Practice: A Pre-Conference Summit on Sleep OT     Sleep is, arguably, the most prevalent, foundational, and health-impacting occupation of humans around the globe.  Sleep issues abound in our 24/7 world and are common in occupational therapy clients.  Sleep medicine is a dynamic new specialty.  Some of the most effective sleep interventions depend on changes to daily routines.  A panel of occupational therapy and occupational science researchers and practitioners will explore with participants potential strategies to catalyze occupational therapy's role in serving individuals with sleep issues. The Pre-Conference Summit schedule can be found here: Catalyzing Occupation in Practice: A Preconference Summit on Sleep OT.

Theme Speaker: Jo Solet, Ph.D., OTR/L: Sleep Rocks!  This year, a theme speaker has been added to the program in order to facilitate a strategic focus.  Dr. Solet is a Harvard researcher in the area of sleep environments.

2018 Proceedings:  Abstracts of presentations will be published in the 2018 SSO:USA Proceedings.

Student Poster Session:  The SSO:USA welcomes submission of poster abstracts from students of any educational level.  Student posters will be scored in a separate review, thus student abstracts submitted will compete for acceptance only against abstracts submitted by other students.
